Benkovac is a town in northern Dalmatia, located about 30 km east of Zadar and 20 km northeast of Biograd na Moru. It developed at the transition from the fertile area of Ravni Kotar to the rugged area of Bukovica. Although it is located on the eastern edge of the plain of Ravnokotar, as the only urban settlement it is considered the center of that area.
The following settlements are part of the town of Benkovac:
Benkovac, Benkovačko Selo, Bjelina, Brgud, Bruška, Buković, Bulić, Ceranje, Dobra Voda, Donje Biljane, Donje Ceranje, Donji Karin, Gornje Biljane, Gornje Ceranje, Islam Grčki, Kašić, Kolarina, Korlat, Kožlovac, Kula Atlagić, Lepuri , Lisičić, Lišane Tinjske, Medviđa, Miranje, Nadin, Perušić Benkovački, Podgrađe, Podlug, Popovići, Pristeg, Prović, Radošinovci, Raštević, Rodaljice, Smilčić, Šopot, Tinj, Vukšić, Zagrad and Zapužane.
Before the war, the current municipalities of Lišane Ostrovičke, Polača and Stankovci were included in the composition of the Benkovac municipality at that time. With the reform of local administration in 1996, Benkovac received the status of a city and the territory of the dissolved municipalities of Lisičić and Smilčić was added to it.
It is known that the Benkovac area was very populated and developed during the medieval Croatian state. Many old Croatian monuments and churches were found in this area. However, long before the arrival of the Croats, ancient peoples built their settlements and erected monuments here. The most famous such site is Asseria - the remains of a Liburnian settlement near Podgrađe.
The most noticeable cultural and historical monument in Benkovac is Kaštel Benković, a fortress named after the Croatian nobles who built it, probably in the second half of the 15th century. The history of the city of Benkovac itself begins with the construction of this fort on a hill that dominates the surrounding area. The castle has a quadrangular floor plan, and on the north side it has a tall square tower. The southern side was strengthened for the Turkish authorities with two round towers at the corners.
The Benkovac castle, which today houses the museum, was once an old Croatian fortress, and the Benković beys turned it into their castle after the arrival of the Turks in the 16th century. That's how they determined his name.
In Benkovac itself, there are the Catholic Church of St. Anthony from the 18th century and the Church of the Virgin Mary (Nativity of Mary) from 1864 (destroyed in the Homeland War, a new church was built), and the Orthodox Church of St. John built in 1885 on the foundations of an older church that was consecrated in 1590.
